The COVID-19 pandemic has produced an urgency for change to come about in almost all aspects of life, and fashion week is no exception. Every company – big and small - has had to reimagine how they will launch their collections in the upcoming seasons. Gucci has finally broken the silence on their plans making them one of the first from the industry to speak out. Through six beautifully written diary entries from Alessandro Michele, the creative director of Gucci, the fluid future he envisions for the fashion house is explained. The company dove into more details during a virtual press conference held for a select group of journalists on Monday, May 25th.

Gucci plans to produce seasonless collections yielding two shows a year. Michele strives to move away from the categorized divisions of the fashion industry – cruise, pre-fall, spring- summer, fall-winter – and shift toward creating “irregular, joyful and absolutely free chapters, which will be written blending rules and genres, feeding on new spaces, linguistic codes and communication platforms.” By making this change, he hopes to pave a new path that veers from the stiff, unswerving structure of the industry.

To conclude, Alessandro Michele writes, “Now that we are still apart, my love for fashion burns. Our species, after all, is like that: we love like crazy in the throes of what is missing.” If the situation of our world has taught us anything, it is to take nothing for granted and to search for the positive. The need for change has allowed creativity to surface, and because of that, fashion week will reemerge for Gucci in a new light. However, as time continues, the question remains: will the industry follow in Gucci’s footsteps?
